Message from the president

Another year came and passed as quickly as the last one despite the crises and the problems it brought. It was a tough year for the Scheherazade Foundation as the endowments were significantly lower than those in the previous years. But the good news is that we were able to execute our renovation project this year, which is now close to completion. We launched three new floors and the last floor is half-way done. This is of tremendous significance as it is the biggest renovation project for a hospital ever undertaken by a non-governmental organization. It is a source of great pride for the Foundation, its board members, advisors, donors, supporters and well wishers!

Moreover, the Foundation has continued its project, “Juvenile Justice”, this year, with the financial support of the Royal Embassy of Netherlands. We were able to attract numerous international experts from all over Europe and from the European Court of Human Rights to participate in the conference. We believe that when a child arrives in court, it is not his fault but the result of mistakes of adults around him. The “Knights of Justice”, be it lawyers, prosecutors, judges or other people that represent the interest of the child in court, minimize the trauma experienced by the child. Successful implementation of this project requires professionalism and training. The Foundation has undertaken a mission to maintain justice for minors on the political agenda, based on the Foundation’s beliefs and abilities.

The need for a child friendly justice has been recently acknowledged by the Council of Europe, which is currently preparing European guidelines on child-friendly justice. These guidelines, building on existing standards, aim to ensure effective access to justice for children. This shows that greater importance is now being placed on justice for children all over Europe.

Another important event held by the Foundation was a Telethon on Realitatea TV. The funds raised will go towards the renovation of a Placement Center, which takes care of 50 children from all over Romania.

We ended the year with our annual Christmas Party where Santa Claus himself came with his helpers to distribute gifts to over 700 children at the Marie Curie Children’s Hospital.

I hope that you will enjoy going through our annual report as it provides a detailed account of what the Foundation was able to achieve in 2009 despite the financial difficulties.

I would like to thank all Romanian Governmental Institutions for supporting and promoting the Foundation’s activities.

Sincerely,
Wajiha Haris
